We had 8 members in attendance for the July edition of our ASL Game Day at Gameology:
Eric V. and Scott Thompson paired up for the Schwerepunkt scenario “A Promise Fulfilled†with Scott’s Americans defeating EV’s Japanese in a very close, exciting game. Scott and Eric both raved about this scenario, and had a ton of fun. I’m definitely going to move this one to the top of my play list.
Matt Cicero’s Germans defeated Blair Bellamy’s Americans in “Keitel and Coxâ€.
Chip Wertenberger’s Russians fell to Dan Plachta’s Germans in “Everything is Lostâ€.
And Jeff Toney and I paired up for “The Tsar’s Infernal Machines†from MMP’s Operations Magazine. We talked about playing this one last month, and Jeff had the special counters, so we gave it a try. The scenario is set on the Russian Front, during WWI, (November, 1914 to be exact.) The Germans are on the attack with 18 conscript squads and 5 leaders (no support weapons.) The Russians are defending with 10 conscript squads, 2 crews and 2 MMG’s. There are some interesting SSR’s in which both sides can do Banzai attacks, even without LOS to a known unit. The Russians get to counter-attack with 5 armored trucks. When they appear, the Germans have to make a dr, 1-2 they battle harden to a 447, 3-4 they pin, 5-6 they break. I took the Russians and Jeff the Germans. But I misread the VC’s and withdrew out of the victory building (d’oh!) and I conceded on turn 2. We flipped it around, and I took the Germans. This time, it was over on turn 3 with almost all of Jeff’s Russian squads dead or captured, and again the armored trucks never got in play. We decided the scenario, while clever, just hadn’t lived up to its potential, and called it day. Hey, all ASL is good. And it was great to play Jeff. We had a lot of fun despite the scenario.
Because all the games cleared early, some of the survivors decided to try “Semper Paratusâ€, a 4-turn ‘U’ series scenario from Jim Stahler featuring Canadians attacking a cluster of German pillboxes. We played side-by-side games with Blair’s Canadians attacking my Germans in one game, and EV’s Canadians attacking Chip’s Germans in the other game. Dan Plachta provided neutral commentary and rules consulting. The scenario plays pretty fast (about 1.5 hours after set-up.) But it’s pretty much a close-combat dice fest. Blair paid dearly for my cold dice from my games with Jeff, they heated up and I diced the living crap out of him for a German win. In the other game EV’s dice (equally hot) delivered a Canadian victory over Chip. We called it a night around 9:30.
It was a long fun day. Eric showed off his tres cool new Chevy Camaro, and Matt brought cookies. We made our usual trek to The Hat for lunch (always good.) It was another great day of ASL!
