We had six members in attendance for the July edition of our ASL Game Day in Bellflower:
Dave Nicholas' French defeated Scott Thompson's Germans in “Beaufort's Feast”
Blair Bellamy's Germans defeated Jim Svette's Russians in “The Trouble with Tigers”. And because they finished fairly quickly, they knocked out the quickie scenario “A Handful of Howdy”, with Blair's Americans defeating Jim's Germans.
Meanwhile Dan Plachta and I paired up for the Texas Tournament Pack scenario “Beware the Hare”. This scenario is a Pete Shelling design, so I knew we couldn't go wrong. I had the Germans; an infantry company supported by a Pz IVH and a Pz IIIN, attacking across a lot of open ground to capture some multi-hex buildings on board 17. The German get reinforcements on turn 3 in the form of 4 more squads, 3 SPW251-1's and a couple of StuG IIIG's. The Russians get an infantry company supported by a 45LL and a couple of 37L AA Guns. This scenario is all about timing. The Germans have a powerful force, but have to keep their foot on the gas petal to avoid running out of time. Although my attack made it close to the last victory building with minimal losses, I came up exactly 1 turn short, and we called it a Russian win.
At this point, it was about 6:00 PM and all the games had cleared. Scott headed home, and the remaining five of us set up “Last Gasp of Wacht Am Rhein”, from the Texas Tournament Pack. This is a 4.5 turn, all armor scenario, with a group of German armor attempting a breakout against a gaggle of American armor. The German's are hampered by inexperienced crews, fuel shortage and mist, while the Americans really lack the hitting power to go toe to toe with the Panthers and Jadpathers. IOW, the Americans can hit easily but need side and rear shots to kill, while the Germans can easily gut almost all the American armor, but have a hard time hitting. Nick and Dan had the Germans, with me, Blair and Jim taking the Americans. It was an interesting scenario, but we ran out of time with two turns to go. I think this scenario would be fun for a late-night, beer fueled game at WCM.
We had our usual lunch at Sizzler, and adjourned for a late dinner at Chris and Pit's (both were very enjoyable.)
