We had ten members in attendance for the June edition of our SoCalASL Game Day in Burbank.
Dan Plachta's Germans defeated Eric Visnowski's Americans in “Link Up”
Dave Nicholas' Russians defeated James Quinn's Germans in “Sweep Up”
It took some higher level math and English skills, but we finally figured out that Mike Soffa's Republicans defeated Dave Lewis' Nationalists in “Makela's End”
Blair Bellamy's Sikhs defeated David Rosner's Germans in “Sikh Defiance”.
And because some games cleared early, four guys got in an additional game:
James Quinn's Germans fell to Blair Bellamy's Partisans in “Rooting Them Out”
and Dan Plachta's Germans and Dave Nicholas' Americans fought to a draw in “10th Panzer Takes the High Ground.”
Ed Esparza and I chose the Journal scenario “In Deadly Combat”. This one shows 14/3 pro-German, but it looked like a cool scenario. I gave Ed his choice of sides and took the defending Germans against my attacking Russians. The Russians are attacking with into a town with a large force of 18 squads and 4 T-28's. They have 6 turns to take 4 of the 7 victory buildings. There's an interesting mechanism that if the Russians take the optional force (2 KV's) the VC goes to 5 buildings, but if the Germans take their optional force (3 StuG IIIB's) the VC goes back to 4 buildings. We both took our optional forces.
I piled everything on board 71 and pushed hard and fast, using my 6 tanks for bypass freeze as much as possible. I got lucky; Ed had his 105 ART (the only thing that could reliably kill my tanks) on board U, where it was relegated to some hard to hit long-distance shots. The fight turned into a CC fest, and in the early going my Russians, led by my 9-2 with two 6-2-8's, gobbled up German squads with minimal loss. Then I hit the factory. Ed killed two of my squads in CC there on turn 3. I immediately hit back on turn 4 and jumped into CC again. That Melee continued, with both sides grinding up squads, for the remainder of the game. Meanwhile, on my half of turn 6 (the last turn) I finally kicked the Germans out of the 3rd VC building, leaving just the Melee in the factory as the only thing between me and victory. On the bottom of turn six, with my troops outnumbered, I fired into the Melee and got lucky; one of his squads broke and only a 7-0 broke on my side, leaving a 2-1 CC in my favor. Unfortunately for me, I failed to win the final 2-1 CC, giving Ed a well earned victory. It was a razor close end to a very interesting scenario.
We had our usual chili dog lunch at Larry's, served as usual by Veronica. The survivors adjourned to Bob's Big Boy for our traditional late dinner. It was a great way to spend a very hot Saturday.
