We had eight members, plus a cameo by Bruce Kirkaldy, for the June edition of our ASL Game Day at Gameology. It turned out all the scenarios were East Front:
Mike Meeks' Germans defeated Dave Nicholas' Soviets in “Worker's Settlement #8”.
David Kocot's Germans defeated Fen Yan's Soviets in “After the Disaster”.
You know when the crew comes across a scenario called “Roasting Rossner”, somebody was going to have to play it, in tribute to our own David Rosner. So Blair Bellamy and John Lehman stepped up, with John's Soviets defeating Blair's Germans.
And Eric Visnowski took the Germans against my attacking Soviets in the late war, heavy metal scenario “Triggerline Zoebel”. This is basically a river (flooded stream) crossing, with a reinforced company of Russians, supported by one two JS II's, two JS IIM's and two T34-85's. The Soviets have to push across a lot of open ground and clear a small village in the back of the board. The Germans have to stop them with a depleted company of infantry backed by two Panthers and two Tigers. Eric had a good set-up, except that his tanks were probably a little too spread out at start. The Russians get to place two footbridges after the German set-up, and a pontoon bridge appears in a specified hex on turn two, which is the only way for the tanks to cross.
I concentrated my best troops and both T34's on Eric's forward infantry position. The Tigers are really no match for the JS's, so I wanted to concentrate on killing the Panthers as quickly as possible. The JS's have to enter on turn 1, so I moved all four of them together to gang rape one of the Panthers that was set up forward. I was willing to exchange one of the JS's to kill the Panther. But fortune favored my armor; Eric's initial shots missed, and one of my low-odds Advanced Fire shots connected and killed the Panther. Meanwhile, my T34's and infantry shredded Eric's forward infantry position, and it looked like everything was going to go my way. By turn 3 my armor had killed all four German tanks without a loss, and my infantry was closing in on the village. We talked about trying something else, but decided to stick with the scenario. I'm glad we did. The Russians have to cross a lot of open ground. What Eric lacked from his tanks he made up for with his infantry, and he conducted a difficult fighting withdrawal like the skilled tactician we all know he is. The scenario came down to last the CC phase, where a couple of my Russian squads survived to tie up the last of the Germans for the win. It was an extremely fun and exciting game, and we both thought we'd like to try it again, as either side.
We enjoyed our usual lunch at The Hat. For dinner, we tried Burgerim, a new, up-scale hamburger place next to Jersey Mike's. It proved to be a good choice.
