We had six players for the June edition of our ASL Game Day at Gameology. Among our numbers this month was Wayne Clark, who is getting back into ASL after a long hiatus. We also had a cameo visit from Matt Cicero, who came with his son Roman and a bundle of ASL goodies for us.
Dave Nicholas and David Lewis paired up for the Starter Kit scenario “Simple Equation”, with Nick's Germans falling to Dave's Americans.
Dan Plachta's Russians defeated Wayne Clark's Finn's in “Forest Bastion”. This was supposed to be an intro game for Wayne, but Dan pronounced Wayne's skills more than ready for the big leagues. Welcome back to ASL Wayne!
And Scott Thompson and I paired up for the Journal scenario “Katyusha's Embrace”. The dice gave Scott the defending Germans and Romanians against my attacking Russians. This is a pretty challenging scenario for both sides, particularly the Axis initial set-up. The Russians get a Rocket OBA module with a pre-reg. Scott set his troops up (correctly I think) very dispersed to mitigate the effects of the Rockets. In that regard he was successful; only one of his German squads was hit when it came down. But the cost was high, in that it put too many Axis units out of position to meet the initial attack. We both think that though the Axis must set up dispersed, they probably need to string themselves out in the center primarily. As a result of the dispersal, I was able to drive my Russian attack straight up the center, with Smoke from SU122's and shellholes from the Rockets as cover. By turn 5 it was pretty obvious the Axis troops were not going to stop the steady forward grind of my Russians, and we called it a Russian victory. I think this is a pretty interesting and challenging scenario. I'd like to hear how others have played it.
For those keeping score, with Wayne's arrival we have now acquired three new members in the previous three weeks.
We adjourned for our usual lunch at The Hat. A Jersey Mike's had opened in the plaza next to Gameology since we were there last, and the survivors traveled over there for dinner. The food was good, but the place was way under-staffed and we had a very long wait. Hopefully they'll fix that in the coming weeks.
