We had 13 members for the June edition of our SoCalASL Game Day at The Guild House in Bellflower. Five of the six scenarios played were Eastern Front:

Ric Hammond's Germans defeated John Lehman's Russians in “Maximum”.

Dan Plachta's Russians defeated Blair Bellamy's Germans in “Amerikanskya Suka”.

Hank W.'s Germans defeated Dave Nicholas' Russians in “The Cost of Non-Compliance”.

Jim Svette's Germans defeated Peter Strand's Russians in “Bread Factory #2”.

Fen Yan's Germans won on the last CC DR against Stance Nixon's Americans in “Rocket's Red Glare”.

And me, Ed Esparza and Guy Jimenez decided on the revised version of “Agony of Doom”. I recalled that the original version was quite fun to play, but almost unwinnable for the Russians. The revised version is more winnable for the Russians, but only by a matter of degrees ( 7/20 pro-German). I let Ed and Guy choose their sides, and they both wanted to attack. So I set up the Germans, and we gave the balance to the Russians (variable entry for the JagdPanthers).

The Russians get a nice reinforced infantry company, supported by a couple of T34-85's, two ISU-122's and an ISU-152. They have to capture 4 of 5 multi-hex buildings on board 3. The Germans get a weak company of mostly conscripts with a couple of LMG's. They also get a Tiger, and one 75L AT Gun that is fairly over matched in the heavy metal slugfest. On turn 1 they are reinforced with a first line Platoon on SPW251-1's, led by a 9-2. Two JagdPanthers arrive on a dr less than the current turn number. I put a couple of squads at 2nd level of M2, and deployed two conscript squads to look scary in the forward woods. The remaining infantry went into a couple of forward strong-points, each built around a leader and an LMG. The 75L went into the woods to cover a flank attack from board 5. Ed and Guy came on in two columns. Ed took the 152 and two trucks with a platoon of infantry for a flanking attack down the woods-road of board 5. Guy took the remaining force to bludgeon through my main line. I got lucky with my Jagd's, which arrived on turn 2 and rolled into position before the Russian 122's could get up to the level 2 hills. Guy and Ed handled their troops well and moved their attack forward. But frankly, it was an uphill fight for them early on. This scenario may be more winnable for the Russians than the previous version, but it is still extremely pro-German, and I felt I had plenty of assets to parry their attacks. Guy and Ed soldiered on bravely and hung in until turn 7, when we finally called this a German win. Its too bad this scenario is such a dog, because it's really fun to play. And I think it captures the late war situation on the East Front in an interesting way.

Some of us went over to the nearby food court for chicken and tacos for lunch. The remainder went to 600 Degrees for pizza. The survivors adjourned to Hambone's for an excellent barbecue dinner. It was another fun, well-attended game day at everyone's favorite venue.
