We had six members, plus a late-arriving Blair Bellamy, for the March edition of our ASL Game Day in Burbank on Saturday. In addition, because Sal Palaez had child-care obligations, he and James Quinn adjourned to Sal's house for two games. In the first, Sal's Germans defeated James' Americans in “Welcome Back”. In the second James' Poles defeated Sal's Slovaks in “Across the Border”.
Meanwhile, at Emerald Knights, Ed Esparza's Pole's defeated Jimmy Hansen's Germans in “Death Throes”.
Dave Nicholas' Germans won a sudden death victory over Larry Reinking's Belgians in “Belgian Blitzkrieg”. And because they had a quick finish, they turned it around. In the second game, Nick's Belgians defeated Larry's Germans. By the time this second game cleared, Blair Bellamy had arrived, and he and Nick set up the SK scenario “N463”, with Nick as the Germans and Blair as the Free French. They decided to call this game a draw so we could adjourn for dinner.
That left me and Eric Visnowski paired up for “Porteau Party”, with me taking the attacking SS against Eric's Americans. This scenario has an SS company attacking through the snow over some tough open ground against a couple of platoons of Americans backed by two Shermans, and later, two M36 TD's. The SS get two StuG's in support, plus four Panthers on turn 2. Because this shows 10/5 pro-American, we gave the Germans the balance (remove on BAZ).
Eric chose an up-front defense, and dished it out to my SS troops on turns 1 and turn 2. Between the lack of cover, and Eric's DR's averaging 4.5, I was quickly down 2 squads. EV chose to leave his Shermans on the hill on turn 2 to inflict further damage, knowing he would loose both to the Panthers once they were in place. But it slowed down my attack, and forced me to keep my StuG's behind the hill until the coast was clear. When the Panthers arrived I put two on level 2, and two more at ground level. Eric brought his TD's in behind a wall at the back of board, but lost one to the long reach of the 75LL guns.
By the bottom of turn 2, Eric's dice cooled off, and mine heated up. They remained pretty even for the remainder of the game. Eric started pulling back on turn 3, under fire from the Panthers. On turn 4 I bum-rushed the remaining TD with all 4 Panthers and both StuG's, and it died shortly after breaking it MA on an intensive fire shot. In the end, my SS cornered the remaining Americans for a turn 7 win.
We both had a blast playing this scenario, and I think giving the Germans the balance really makes a difference. We both thought this was worth playing again as either side.
We adjourned to Larry's for our usual chili dog lunch, and the survivors retired to Bob's Big Boy for our traditional late dinner. It was fun day for everyone!
