We had four members for our Special 5th Saturday SoCalASL Game Day. We had originally planned to meet in Winnetka at Dave Rosner's Condo rec room. But a scheduling SNAFU (not Dave's fault) prevented us from playing there. Luckily, our friends at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth were happy to accommodate us for the day.

Eric Visnowski's Germans and Dave Nicholas' Russians fought to a draw in “Grab and Go”.

And Dave Rosner brought “Kangaroos in Louisendorf”, a soon to be released scenario from an upcoming Canadian scenario pack. Dave had just finished playing this on VAASL as the Germans, where he lost to Steve Knippel. He wanted to try it again as the Germans, so I took the attacking Canadians. The Canucks secretly choose their VC's prior to set-up; either take four building around a village crossroads, or control all level 1 & 2 hexes on a nearby board. I chose the former. The Germans get an 80mm OBA with a level 3 off-board observer. Those hill hexes were almost all open (or covered with woods). I figured an 80mm OBA dropped as harassing would make those hexes a bitch to take, compared to four one hex buildings.

The Germans get an 88 AA Gun, a 75L AT Gun, and a 20L AA Gun, plus a handful of mixed quality infantry. The Canadians have a reinforced company mounted in Kangaroos, supported by Churchills. I decided to go for the village, and sent everyone in that direction. With only 5 turns I figured there was no time for finesse. I kept everyone mounted until they closed on the village. Dave's first shot with the 88 burned the Kangaroo with my 9-2 leader, and later immobilized a Churchill, but everyone else got in the village and unloaded without loss. On turn 3 I used Smoke to cross the road and swarmed the few defenders in the village. It was over by turn 4.

There were things I liked about this scenario; it's short, violent and has an interesting OB. But I'm not a fan of scenarios with OBA, not because I don't know the rules (I use OBA regularly in CG's). I think it's too powerful and capricious, especially in short scenarios. Also, the 88 AA Gun is much too critical; it is the only thing that can defeat the Churchills (except for PF's). That makes the German set-up a guessing game more than anything else. Dave and I had fun, but I don't think I'd try this one again anytime soon.

Since we still had some time, we tried “Super Bazooka” from Forgotten War. Dave took the attacking N. Korean T-34's and I took the hard-pressed Americans. This proved to be a quick playing and surprisingly fun scenario. My Americans defeated Dave's N. Koreans. We both had fun, and both of us thought we'd try it again as either side.

Because San Carlo Deli was closed for the holiday, so we rolled over to The Munch Box (or as E.V. calls it; 'Manson-burger'.) We adjourned for our traditional late dinner at The Habit. Despite our early SNAFU, we had a great 5th Saturday Game Day!
