We had 12 members, plus cameo appearances from Matt Cicero and Dave Rosner, for the May edition of our ASL Game Day at Emerald Knights in Burbank:
Larry Reinking's French defeated Eric Visnowski's Germans in “The Abbeville Bridgehead”.
Ed Esparza's Russians defeated Jimmy Hansen's Italians in “Cuando Te Vas”.
Dave Nicholas' Japanese defeated Dan Plachta's Americans in “Taking Heads”.
Dave Lewis' Americans and Fen Yan's Germans fought to a draw in the Deluxe scenario “Bogged Down”.
Blair Bellamy's Americans defeated Sal Pelaez' Germans in the paradrop scenario “Hunters From the Sky”.
And the dice gave Nadir Elfarra the defending French against my attacking Germans in the early war scenario “Mormal Forest” from last year's Friendly Fire pack. The Germans get a reinforced company plus 2 SPW251-1's and 3 SPW251-10 (37L armed) halftracks to capture 2 of 3 stone buildings. The French have a mixture of elite and first line infantry supported by 2 Renault tanks, with 2 more arriving on turn 2, a 75 Art and a 25LL AT Gun. The Germans also get a 37L AT Gun and a 105 Art.
The board has a large wooded area in the center, and open areas on the sides. The victory building on the French left is in a small village, with a lot of open space in front. The other two buildings are center-right on the board (from the French perspective), with woods in front. Nadir split his force, with half protecting the left building and the remainder in the woods in the center. I put my Art and the light mortar on the level 2 hill facing the French left, and left 2 squads and an 8-0 leader in the 251-1's behind the hill. I figured the threat would keep Nadir from shifting much to his right. I sent everyone else up the middle, through the woods, where they could go after the center-right buildings or turn into the French left and support a quick run for the building on that side. The fight up the middle was a slog, but the Germans had a numerical advantage, and I kept pressing forward. The Germans surrounded the first Center-right building, and I unleashed the halftrack reserves to sweep in, overrun a couple of French units on the woods road, and support the center attack. But the French kept hanging on in the front building, and I had to slow my attack to finish it off. In the meantime, Nadir swung almost all of his left side troops into the woods to cover the remaining building on the right rear. With two German movement phases to go, I realized he was too strong in front of the second building for me to take it in time. But he had left only one squad and a couple of crews to cover the building on his left. So I turned a reinforced platoon, supported by Smoke from my 105, and rushed toward the building on the French left. My troops just barely won the foot race, and got into the building in force. On the final German player turn I was able to break the squad in the left hand building to gain control. But Nadir's troops were *still* holding on to the center building, even though I had a huge numerical advantage in CC. So it all came down to the last Melee phase. I needed a 7 to kill the French units in CC, and rolled a 5 for the win. Whew! What a game. Down to the last CC dice roll. Nadir played a great game, and this could have easily gone the other way. We had great fun and both thought we'd try this one again, as either side.
We had our usual chili dog lunch at Veronica's. The survivors decided to return to Tally Rand Restaurant again this month for a late dinner. It was a great way to wrap up an awesome day of ASL!
