I knew that many of our Burbank game day regulars would be otherwise occupied this month. As it turned out we had a total of five players, including two completely new Starter Kit guys, for the May edition of our ASL Game Day at Emerald Knights.
Dave Nicholas organized a playing of the classic SK scenario “Retaking Vierville” between our two new players, David Franco from Bakersfield and David Lewis from Glendale, with Nick as the facilitator/kibbutzer. The game went well, and came down to the last possible dice roll when David Lewis' Americans survived in CC to defeat David Franco's Germans. Both guys had a lot of fun and really got a lot out of the playing.
That left me and Ed Esparza to pair up for the Journal 11 scenario ” Bedburg Bite”, with the dice giving me the attacking Canadians and Ed the defending Germans. I liked this scenario a lot. I think it's very challenging and interesting for both sides. Ed managed to burn one of my Churchills with a PF, but my Badger got away with murder throughout the game by staying in motion a couple of hexes away from the German infantry. In the end, it came down to a slugfest for the three hex victory building at the back of the board, and my Canadians just barely squeaked out a win.
We introduced our new guys to the wonders of Veronica's chili dogs, and both guys joined Nick and I for our traditional late dinner at Bob's Big Boy. All in all it was a very productive day, and both Daves said they'd be back next Saturday in Chatsworth.
