We had 9 members in attendance for the May edition of our SoCalASL Game Day at JJ’s Game Lounge:
Jaime Palaez took the Russians against Eric Visnowski’s Germans in “Fields of Black Goldâ€. Jaime was joined by a late-arriving Dan Plachta, and after a down-to-the-last DR playing, The Russians took a hard-fought win.
And at the table over, Jaime’s brother Sal duked it out with Mike Soffa in “Panzers Forwardâ€, with Mike’s Germans just barely pulling out a victory over Sal’s French.
Across the aisle, Dave Rosner’s Japanese defeated John Lehman’s Chinese in the excellent scenario “Marco Polo Bridge Incidentâ€, or as I like to call it “Everyone Dies.â€
That left me and Dave Nicholas to pair up again this week, and again I convinced him it would be fun to play something out of Hakkaa Paalle. This week we went with “Father Sunshineâ€. It’s an interesting, mostly tank battle with a small Finnish infantry force supporting a gaggle of tanks trying exit, including a captured ISU 152 named Father Sunshine. The Russians have a small group of infantry and two HIP T34-85’s (later joined by a third) trying to stop them. It turned out to be a wild game, with both of us thinking we were out of it at various times. The scenario was dicey as hell, but fun none the less. In the end, my Russians stopped Dave’s Finns and took the win. We both thought we'd like to play this one again.
Dave and I had chosen a scenario that was not too large in order to allow time for a run-through of a small Marine-Japanese scenario Eric is designing. I’m pleased to say that was time well spent, and the scenario looks very promising.
We had our usual lunch next door at San Carlo Deli, and adjourned for a very late dinner Marie Calendars.
