We had seven members in attendance for our first ASL Game Day in May:
Eric Visnowski's Soviets defeated Jim Svette's SS in “The Fraternal Grave”.
Blair Bellamy's Americans defeated Fen Yan's Japanese in the classic Deluxe scenario “Mayhem in Manila”.
And Dave “Special K” Kocot and I took the Americans against Dave Nicholas' Japanese in “Wildcat Strike”. This is a Pete Shelling scenario that I had played several years ago. I knew it was good, and it's perfectly balanced on ROAR. The Americans need to cross half of board 69 and have more infantry EVP than the Japanese in the victory area of Board 10Z. This scenario is very challenging for both sides. The Japanese get bonus points each turn for holding a building on board 69, so they need to give ground slowly while withstanding massive FP from the American squads and their armor support. They also can't allow the Americans to achieve a breakthrough due to the sudden death nature of the VC's. The Americans get a sizable force, but they have to attack with 6 morale troops and have only 4 leaders. Nick set up his Japanese with an in-depth defense. Dave and I split the Americans evenly and attacked on a broad front, trying to give up as few -2 shots as possible.
The Americans took tremendous casualties grinding across the board into the VC area, including losing 2.5 squads and a leader to a single Japanese squad in an ambush. The Americans also lost two tank MA's to boxcars. Nick's luck in CC rivaled Dave 'Butcher of Burbank' Rosner's for most of the game. But in the end, he simply ran out of troops, and Dave and I were able to cram enough squads into the VC area for the win. It was a fun and very exciting game. We all enjoyed the scenario greatly. I am planning to play it again very soon.
Thankfully, the AC was cranked up on high all day, and there were no card players in the store, which left plenty of room for us to sprawl out. We had our usual lunch at The Hat, and the survivors grabbed a late dinner at Jersey Mike's. It was a great way to spend a hot Saturday!
