We had 8 members, plus a cameo by Bruce Kirkaldy, who joined us for lunch, for the May edition of our SoCalASL Game Day at Gameology.
Eric Visnowski and Blair Bellamy paired up for “Block Busting At Bokruisk”, with EV taking the attacking Russians and Blair with the defending Germans. I had played this scenario before, and because my game cleared early I watched the last few turns. This is a hard attack for the Russians, made more so with EV's uncharacteristically bad dice. That's not to take away from Blair's fine play; he had a very good setup and didn't give Eric an opening. It seemed that EV's troops were pressing forward by his shear force of will, and unwillingness to give up as his infantry was badly cut up. In the end though, it was obvious that the Russians had taken too many casualties to keep up the fight, and they called it a German victory. This is a very cool scenario, if tough on the Germans. I my opinion it would still be worth the effort.
In the battle of Jims, Jim Svette's Americans defeated Jimmy Hansen's Germans in “Hellava Patrol Leader”.
Gerard Unterreiner, a long-time player, returning from a 15 year hiatus and paired up with Dave Nicholas for “Arriverdici Nembo”. In their first playing, Nick's Italians defeated Gerard's Brits. They then turned it around, and Gerard's Italians defeated Nick's Brits. It was only after this second playing that they realized they'd played both games on the wrong board. Gerard picked up things back up pretty quickly, and promised he'd be back next month.
And Scott Thompson and I paired up for “Raff's Rules”. The dice gave me the Germans and Scott the attacking Americans. This is an interesting scenario and has been on my playlist since it came out.
I put my 105 Guns in the woods on the rear board edge, with my infantry as far forward as possible to take advantage of some -2 shots to disrupt the advancing para's. I put the 20L in the center, where it could reach as far forward as possible, and the 88L in the center rear. Scott came on hard and fast, hitting the German right flank with everything he had. Because he had follow-up troops coming in on turn 2, I had to leave most of my troops in their places on the bottom of turn 1. He brought those follow-up forces behind the first, and I swung my left flank forces to the center to help bolster my thin right flank. Unfortunately, Scott's dice were terrible, and mine were hot. Scott's troops broke early and often, and by turn 4 it was pretty much over for the Americans and we called it a German victory.
I like this scenario a lot, and want to try it again. Because there's a force purchase aspect to it, there's plenty of replay value. In our choices, I took four ? counters and purchased two VP. Scott spent his 8 points on two MMG's and two 60mm Mtrs, which I think was the play I would choose as well.
We tried setting up “A Real Barn Burner”, but Scott's dice continued to plague him, and we called this one off after one turn.
We made our traditional trek to The Hat for lunch, and because all the games cleared pretty early, the survivors adjourned to Jersey Mike's for dinner. Because of the forecasted rain, we pretty much had the store to ourselves for most of the day. It was a great day as usual.
