Ok, I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere, but, being a noob, I need to ask: Is there something about ASL (or something about modern warfare for that matter) that makes it unsuitable for simulating modern conflicts?

Where it gets difficult for the existing ASL rules sytem to simulate Modern ASL is in the area of helicopters, guided AT missiles, grenade launchers, advanced optics and such.

I've seen this discussion several times on other forums. I've always felt that ASL can replicate conflicts up until around the mid- to late '50's (think Korea and the French in Indochina, early Arab/Israeli conflicts (pre-Sagger employment).

I also think that the Banana Wars and other post-WWI conflicts are about the earliest conflicts that current ASL can cover well.

Mark Neukom used to feel the real issue was a squads ability to lay down fire increased (in his mind) dramatically with the advent of 'full auto'. In other words a typical 7-6-8 squad might be able to lay down 21 FP from a single squad as a burst option (and thus consuming their ammo) So in a game sense a squad might be able to lay down significantly more firepower than than combat odds tables permit.

Weapons systems (like Scott said), and defensive gear like 'flak' jackets influence modern battle.

((Imagine an infantry platoon that takes less damage, does more damage, moves faster, and recovers more quickly….. how soon do you run out of dice options that aren't “yah, ZOMG”)) Marines vs Italian Conscripts… for example

The AH game MBT simulated modern warfare -Warsaw Pact- on a semi tactical level back in the late 80s.It included air ops as support. MBT had a 'feel' similar to ASL but was modeled on a scale closer to that of Panzer Blitz- panzer Leader.I played MBT only a few times and enjoyed it. EV

Modern Weapon Systems found in most modern tanks, like the M1-A1 equate to if it can see it….it's dead. Modern artillery means that if its in range…it's dead. Kinda deadly all the way around. Also the tactical area was a region of about 1000 yds, now it's more like 5,000yards, even more with the advent of space based observation.
