Hi all,
Just wanted to introduce myself and say “hello” to everyone; I'm glad I found the club and I waited until my copy of ASLSK1 arrived before reaching out to the group. In terms of background, I think I share the same experience as a lot of ASLers: picked up SL/COI in the 80's and learned how to play using the programmed instructions with my brother – we look back on those days fondly; once college and jobs came it was tough to keep playing. Fast-forward to 2001 and I discovered the game was still around (but Avalon Hill was not)!
I excitedly picked up a copy of the 2nd Ed. ASLRB, Beyond Valor, Yanks, and West of Alamein (did I say 'excitedly?') and promptly got lost looking for a systematic way to start learning the new rules. Shelved the whole set for a few years until a month ago when I saw that Starter Kits had been released… I'm now going through SK1 and really picking up the new system, but need to start playing the full scenarios one at a time.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying out a game or two with some of you via VASL/PBEM any time, and I'm planning on coming to the LA Game Day in Oct. If anyone is interested in playing (or replaying) the very first SK1 scenario, please PM me.
Best,

I'm also a newbie, both to ASL and to SoCalASL, but I think you'll find that these are a great group of guys and gals. They love the game and have no problems helping out us noobs.
I'm also on the Starter Kits, so if you want to set up a game on VASL, just PM me and we can schedule something. Look forward to seeing you.

If I knew how to use VASL I would jump at the chance. Maybe we can get a FTF in at the LA Game Day.

September 22, 2008 at 7:06 pm #5403Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterWelcome Neil! Look forward to meeting you! And thanks for the offer to help with website stuff and graphics.
If you ever get stuck for ASL goodies, let me know…the Club has a small stock of stuff and we can also get more for you as needed. I do have SK#2 and SK#3 in stock if (when) you need them.
September 23, 2008 at 4:18 am #5405testuserMemberThanks for the warm welcome everyone — sending out the relevant PMs to get some play time in; also looking forward to Oct. Game Day. Matt – I thank you for the offer; I have SK2 and SK3 (I'm a completist which is a dangerous mix with ASL) but I am trying to get my brother re-hooked so I may take you up on buying another physical copy for an early holiday gift.
Also, Mike's question has me thinking, should there be a hands-on session at one of the game days to show how to get a game up and running on VASL? Just thinking out loud since I have VASL installed (but admittedly have not fully tested it for a real game). Possibly, a laptop demonstration in-store to get people oriented by members who are using it regularly. We can capture the orientation with a mic and software (eg. so there is a voice-over) if there is a willing victim (um.. demonstrator) and post it on the SoCalASL site.
Then again, maybe the people who come to Game Days prefer face-to-face gaming (which I do) but more ASL is always a good thing for the player and the hobby and VASL adds that.

Looks like you and I followed a similar path.
I was an SL/COI player way back in the 80's too. I found ASL to be a bit confusing when it came out. There wasn't anyone local who could walk me through the new rule chages and with work and school I put it on the back burner.Just about 5 months ago I discovered the starter kits
and found SocalASL and am now playing SK.Hope to see you at the next Games Day

September 25, 2008 at 8:33 pm #5408Jim AikensKeymasterHi Neil et.al.
I'm going to strap hang onto you post. I'm a noob as well, and once again followed a similar gaming path as indicated by many in previous posts to this thread. In addition to SL / COI a group of us played many of the SPI and AH war games every weekend – and week days when we could swing it. College, military service and work quickly decimated what was a very tight knit group of players. Now almost 30 years later I'm trying to relive my early days LOL.
At any rate, I stumbled upon MMP about a year ago and started to get hooked again. Once again work got in the way with an employer change earlier this year, but now I'm back at it and look forward to attending my first LA Game Day in Oct! I would also be interested in playing via VASL using the scenarios in the SK's for any that are interested.
Best Regards,
Nick Rusch
