Last week I had the pleasure to bring my good friend and SoCalASL ex-pat Candice Juliano to a Game Day. This week, I brought another good friend; Darrell Wright from Raleigh, NC, who is here on business. We had 6 players, including Darrell, for our Game Day at Game House in Bellflower:
Dan Plachta's Germans defeated Eric Visnowski's Canadians in the Lone Canuck scenario “Steeple Chasing”. And because their game got over pretty quickly, they set up another Lone Canuck scenario, “Nankai Shitai”, with Dan's Aussies defeating EV's Japanese.
Dave Nicholas won the roll-off to play Darrell, and they chose the Schwerepunkt scenario “Corridor of Extinction”, with Nick's Russians defeating Darrell's Germans.
And that left me and Scott Thompson to pair up for “Propitious Arrival” from Schwerepunkt. This is a France, 1940 mostly armor battle, and the dice gave Scott the French, with a company of infantry and 10 FCM tanks. The Germans get four recon (Pz I and II) tanks at start, with the job of slowing down the French infantry assault until their reinforcements arrive on turn 2. The German reinforcements include a company of infantry, 3 Pz III's and 2 Pz IV's. The recon tanks are no match for the FCM's, but the French tanks are very slow (9 MP) and radio-less. The Pz III's and IV's can kill the FCM's, but not easily, and have the advantage of speed and radios. Scott sent his infantry into the town, where they were cut up badly by the German recon tanks, and split his armor, sending half to one hill and half to another (both victory areas.) My infantry made it into down thanks to the covering fire from the recon tanks and support from the Pz IV's. I sent the Pz III's to hit the French right, where Scott had 3 tanks, (2 in motion). In the end, I was able to kill enough FCM's and capture the village, which gave me enough VC's to run out the clock for the win.
Scott had some bad luck in this one; his tanks were able to score hits without any trouble, but he kept rolling high on his TK's (something like 11 times in a row.) If his TK's had been average this would have been a very close game. We both decided it was well worth the effort and would definitely like to try it again.
Because all the games cleared early, Darrell and I took the Belgians against Nick's Germans in “De Zwarte Duivels”, also from the Schwerepunkt pack. I had lost this scenario badly last week playing the Germans because I had a risky set-up that didn't pay off. Nick played the Germans much more sensibly and won handily.
We had our usual lunch at Sizzler, and the survivors introduced Darrell to Chris and Pitt's Barbecue for dinner. It was a nice day of ASL all around.
