We had 9 members for the November edition of our ASL Game Day at Paper Hero's in Sherman Oaks.
James Quinn's Russians defeated Eric Visnowski's Germans in the Deluxe scenario “Breakout”.
Blair Bellamy's Marines defeated Sal Pelaez' Japanese in “Kawaguchi's Gamble”.
Peter Stand's Americans defeated Larry Reinking's Germans in Hatten in Flames scenario “Liehr Launches First”.
And Dave Nicholas and Chris Watson-Wood took the Italian/Partisans against my attacking Germans in the Dispatches scenario “Brandenburg Blitz”. This is an interesting scenario featuring an attack through fog for the first two turns. Unfortunately, after playing a couple of turns, we realized we'd totally fucked up playing the fog condition. We decided to throw it in as a non-result. At that point, Nick was content to just kibitz, and Chris and I paired up for “Start Fall Gelb”, another Dispatches scenario. Chris took the defending Belgians against my Germans. This is a pretty cool tournament size scenario, and a good intro for him into early war combined arms.
The Germans have to clear a small village, and don't get a lot of time to do it. Chris had a good set-up, but I spotted an approach on the German right that let me flank the forward Belgian defenders and force the defense into motion to respond. I can see why ROAR has this one fairly pro-defender; the Germans don't have much of a numeric advantage and are very tight for time. Chris handled his troops with skill, and I pretty much had to dice the snot out of him to stay in the game. I had not had a HOB result in at least the last half-dozen games. So poor Chis was on the receiving end of my shift in fortune. I rolled six snake-eyes during the game, and by the end I had 3 heroes in the fight. It took all of those snake-eyes and more to pull out a very close win. Chris played a great game, and we had a lot of fun with this one.
We had our usual lunch next door at Nat's. The survivors adjourned to Pizza Rev for a late dinner. It was a really fun day of ASL.
