We had 7 members for the November edition of our ASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth:

Mike Soffa's Germans defeated Dave Rosner's Russians in “Kiss of Fury”.

James Quinn's Poles defeated Dave Nicholas' Germans in the old C.H. scenario “Close Order Driel”.

And Sal Pelaez took the Germans against me and Bill Yuen as the defending Russians in the Dispatches scenario “Prescription for the Commissar”. Sal and I had been trying to connect with a RB scenario for quite a while, and though this one looked pretty ambitious we decided to give it a try. Bill arrived just as we started setting up, and joined me on the defense. The location is in front of the Commissar's House, where the Germans have lined up 14 x 8-3-8 well-led assault engineer squads, armed with DC's and a couple of FT's. They're supported by 9 x 5-4-8's and 7 x 4-6-7's, a ton of MG's, and later four assault guns with 150 mm guns. The Russians have 20 squads of 4-5-8's and 4-4-7's, with 2 x 82mm MTRs, and a bunch of MG's. They're well dug into a bunch fortified fanatic strongpoints, including the Commissar's House. The Germans have to capture 17 more stone location than they loose. This scenario is dead-even (6/6) on ROAR.

The great thing about Red Barricades (CG's or scenarios) is that it's all about the infantry combat fundamentals : getting down your infantry smoke, firelanes, laying Residual Fire, when to shoot and when to maintain concealment, building fire bases, placing DC's, etc. Sal decided to go very heavy in the center and come straight at the Commissar's House, with a flank attack to take out the ruins of the Chemist Shop. Bill and I had concentrated almost all of our troops in and around the Commissar's House, with a secondary strong position to the northwest. We had only a minimal defense in the Chemist Shop, since there was no way to effectively support this flank. Sal came in hard on turn one, nearly crushing the Chemist Shop defense in one blow, and coming within 1 hex of the Commissar's House. Bill responded by counter-attacking out of our northwest strongpoint into the German flank to try to draw off some of the German assault. Sal executed his attack with precision, and really demonstrated his infantry skills. Both sides hammered each other, but by mid-game we were running out of time, and Sal was running out of men. We called this one a Russian victory.

We all had a blast with this one. It's big, but I think if the Russians have a set-up in advance, it would be playable in a long game day. We all want to try this one again.

We had our usual lunch on the patio at San Carlo Deli, and the survivors retired to The Habit for a late dinner. It was another awesome day of ASL!
