We had five members for our ASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth on Saturday.
Eric Visnowski's Japanese defeated Phil Seymour's Chinese on the last CC DR in the Deluxe scenario “Phoenix Rising” from the WO Deluxe pack. This looks like a very cool scenario, with 26 5-3-7 Chinese squads, supported by air power and OBA, storming a hill. It's big, but Phil and EV were able to knock it out in about 6 hours, including set-up. Of course Eric and Phil are both very fast players.
And Dave Nicholas took the Romanians and I took the Germans as we faced off against Blair Bellamy's Russians in the ESG scenario “Talon's Grip”. First, I have to say this is a good three-player scenario, and we all had a lot of fun playing it. ROAR has this 4/2 pro-Axis, and we thought the Russians could use some help, so we gave them the balance (upgrading two 4-2-6's to 4-4-7's.)
The Russians get 8 squads of mixed infantry, plus a platoon of reinforcements, but only 2 leaders and an ELR of 2. The Axis gets a German force and a Romanian force, both with 7 squads. The Germans get a PzIII and and an AC in support. They have to capture 11 buildings or exit 9 EVP of infantry. Nick and I decided to attack as far apart from each other as possible and create of pincer style attack. We held our armor back until the Russian AT Gun appeared. This scenario ended up being a fight to the death, with both sides not having quite enough strength to do everything they wanted to. Blair and Nick got into a huge, multi-turn Melee, which Nick eventually won with a surviving half squad and wounded Hero. The Axis forces eventually ground out a victory, with the Russians down to one good order squad and the Axis with barely more. We had a lot of laughs and a lot of fun with this one, and we all thought we'd try it again. Just be sure to give the Russians the balance.
We had our usual excellent lunch at San Carlo Deli. The survivors adjourned to The Habit for dinner. It was a nice escape from the holiday festivities, and another great day of ASL!
