We had six members in attendance, plus a cameo by Bill Yuen, for our November meeting at JJ's Game Lounge in Chatsworth:
Ed Esparza's Marines defeated Dave Rosner's Japanese in the excellent Deluxe scenario “Nightmare at Naha”.
And Sal Palaez and I took the Russians against Eric Visnowski's Germans in “Something Borrowed”. This is an interesting scenario that has the Russians attacking with a reinforced infantry company supported by Matildas and Valentines against a company of Germans supported by captured/converted T34-41's. The Russians have to capture a village, but have to traverse a lot of open ground to do it. Sal and I hatched a plan that had our 5-2-7's riding into the teeth of Eric's defense. In the end, it was a bad plan, and Eric made us pay dearly. We called this one a German win in fairly short order. We all thought it was a fun scenario. Sal and I thought it is winnable as the Russians, but they need to have a more workable plan.
Sal had to pull out at that point, but we knew Dave Nicholas was on the way. So Eric and I sent up “Takin' Eibetingen” from Dispatches from the Bunker. Eric and Nick took the attacking Americans against my mixed-quality German force. The Americans had some bad luck early with their WP and Smoke placement (not getting any) and I bagged one of their two Shermans early. After some tough fighting, the Americans were closing in on the last German defensive position when one of my conscripts got a lucky PF shot on the second Sherman, which put the Americans over the CVP cap and gave my Germans the victory. This was a fun scenario that came down to the wire. I think we might see this one in a future WCM mini-tournament.
Of course the best part of playing at JJ's is being able to walk next door to the San Carlo Italian Deli for lunch. Because of the holiday weekend, the place was deader than Elvis. All our games cleared pretty early, so we adjourned to The Habit for an excellent dinner.
All in all, it was another great day of ASL.
