We had 5 players for our SoCalASL Game Day at Gameology, plus a cameo from Jim Svette, who joined us for lunch but didn't play.
We got off to a slow start because the store was full of card players; there were 3 different tournaments going on with an unexpectedly high turn-out. We cooled out heels for a while, went to lunch early, and set our games up on the patio. At about 3:00 there was finally enough space to move us indoors. In the end, we were none the worse for wear.
Dave (DL) Lewis' Germans defeated Dan Plachta's French in “Beaufort's Feast”. DL has been working his way up from ASLSK and developing his skill set steadily over the last several months. As we all know, it's an achievement to beat a player of Dan's caliber, and DL deserves a special congratulations on his win. Clearly its a reflection on his hard work and great attitude.
I took the Russians against Dave Nicholas and Candice Juliano's Germans in the new Schwerepunkt scenario “Anatoloy's Ambush”. Nick had nearly pulled off a win as the Russian a couple of weeks ago, and I wanted to try this. I set up entirely in the village, but HIP'ed my tanks so they could swing out and come in behind the Germans if they went for the road. My plan was to catch them in a vice, with my reinforcements coming in on one side and my HIP tanks hitting from the other. The problem is, in my opinion, if the Germans keep their tanks together it's almost impossible for the Russians to win and my Russian tanks were knocked out without doing damage to the Germans. Our game was over in short order with an epic Russian fail, and we moved on to something else.
That something else “De Zwarte Duivels” from the latest Schwerepunkt pack. Once again, Candice and Nick paired up, this time as the attacking Dutch, against my defending Germans. It seemed the obvious German set-up was the huge building in the center of the board, but I was in a creative mood and decided on an unconventional set-up in the smaller building on the German left. I covered all of its approaches with fire from the units south of the canal, and hoped to cut them up trying to come in. As it turned out, I should have gone with the obvious strategy. The Dutch took some casualties, but were able to get into the building and overwhelm my German defenders. We called it a Dutch win on turn 4.
We had our usual lunch at The Hat, and retired to Tommy's for a late dinner. Though we got off to a slow start, it all worked out fine in the end and we had a great day.
