We had a total of three members for our SoCalASL Game Day at the Guild House in Bellflower. We decided on the ESG scenario “Scorpions in a Bottle”, with Dan Plachta taking the Russians again me and John Lehman as the Germans.
This is an Operation Barbarossa scenario that both Dan and I had played before. It has a company of conscripts defending a village against two platoons of elite German infantry. The Russians get three tanks and another company of 1st line infantry as reinforcements. There are seven VC hexes scattered around the board, and the Germans have to grab and hold 6 of them. The Germans get reinforcements in the form of 3 platoons of 1st line infantry supported by two PzIIIF's, two PzIIF's and a PzIVD. John took the initial force and I took the reinforcements. Dan held his tanks back, and made a strong move to come after the southern-most VC hex. I brought my reinforcements on, and decided to go straight at him with all my strength through the hills, in hopes of defeating the Russian reinforcements in detail and hitting the village from behind. Unfortunately I really should have counted out the movement points it would take to go that way, and after one turn of crushing the Russians on that flank, I turned around and headed to my right. In effect, I had wasted a turn. In the meantime, John's attack was struggling as some reinforcing Russians were able to slip into the village to help out the conscripts. Ultimately, my reverse movement proved fatal for the Germans. We simply ran out of time. This is a fun scenario with interesting challenges for both sides. I had over-committed to my left against Dan's head-fake in that direction. In retrospect, I should have sent a couple of squads and the PzII's to deal with the threat, and sent everyone else hard and fast toward the village. Dan played a great game and well deserved the win.
By this time it was 6:00 PM and John had to pull out. So Dan and I set up “Mechanized Sacrifice” from the new Action Pack. This is another Operation Barbarossa scenario. But this one is all-armor. It has a large contingent of Russian AFV's trying to exit, with only four German AFV's and a HS with an ATR in their way. But the terrain is pretty restrictive, and the Russians have a long way to go. The Germans get four PzIIIH's on turn 3 to try to shut the door. This scenario is a lot like “Puma Prowls”, only more so. If you like all-armor battles this is an interesting and challenging one for both sides. I think it will find a lot of use as an armor tutorial. It's a quick-playing and fun scenario that we finished in only 3 hours. In the end, my Germans stopped Dan's Russians.
We had a fellow named Rick from Long Beach stop by and check us out. He promised he'd be back next month.
We had our usual lunch at Burger King, and Dan and I retired to Chris and Pit's for a late barbecue dinner.
