We had 8 members for the October edition of our SoCalASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth:

Jaime Pelaez' Germans defeated James Quinn's Russians in “Workers Settlement #8”.

Blair Bellamy's Soviets and their 'all you can eat' T34-85's defeated Sal Pelaez' Germans in the SK scenario “Nothing Left to Lose”.

Dave Nicholas' Germans defeated Phil Seymour's Free French in the LFT scenario “9th Compagnie Sacrifice”.

And Eric “Mr. Deluxe” Visnowski wanted to take a crack as the SS in “Checking Out”. I had played this once as the SS, and Eric had previous played it as the Americans. ROAR shows this a about 60/40 pro-American, and he wanted the challenge. I set up the Americans in three interlocking strong-points of about 5 squads each. The key for the Americans is to stay spread out. The Germans have one MMG and some LMG's, so there's nothing that's going to go on a massive rate tear and suppress all of the defenders in one sector. Frankly, I think as long as the Americans don't stack, the SS will be hard-pressed to make much headway. I set up to go into the open building on the American left, but Eric saw that gambit and bum's rushed the building on the first turn. Unfortunately he wasn't able to get in there in enough strength to punch his way out. His center and left flank attacks made little headway, though EV soldiered on valiantly. Time ran out with a lot of dead Germans and not much to show for it. We both think this one is pretty unwinnable against a competent American player. Though I like the concept (big all-infantry Deluxe battle), I think there isn't enough tension to keep it interesting. However, it would be useful as a tutorial for LOS blind hex calculation and DFF principles. Of course, Eric and I always have a good time playing each other, and all ASL is good.

We had our usual excellent lunch on the patio at San Carlo Deli. The survivors were joined by David Rosner at The Hat for our traditional dinner.
