We had 7 members at our SoCalASL Game Day in Chatsworth.
Ed Esparza's Russians defeated Jimmy Hansen's Germans in “All the Stops”.
Dan Plachta's Germans defeated Eric Visnowski's Russians in their re-match of “In Deadly Combat”. And because their game got over with time to spare, the set up “Unplanned Attack”, with Dan's Germans defeating Eric's Americans.
And Blair Bellamy took the Russians against me and Dave Nicholas as the Germans in “Busting in Balta” from the latest Action Pack. This is a big scenario, with four boards and about 50 squad equivalents. The Germans get about 2 companies, a mix of 5-4-8's backed by 8-3-8 Assault Engineers, with DC's, FT's and excellent leadership. The Russians get a couple of companies of 4-4-7's, with decent leadership, 2 HMG's, 2 MMG's, two 82mm MTRS and some LMG's. The also get three T-26's as reinforcements. The Germans have no response to the tanks; not so much as an ATR.
Dave took the on-board force, and I took the force entering on the south edge. On the face of it, this looks like a pretty straight forward infantry attack. In truth, its a lot harder than it looks. And Blair had an excellent and flexible defense. I hit the southern three buildings, while Dave''s force drove for the two southern buildings in his front and took the rest of his force straight east. I sent a flanking force of 2 1/2 squads with an 8-1 along the far east board edge. Things went to shit for us on the first Prep shot, when Dave boxed a 16+1 shot that was intended to set up his southern attack. They went to shit still further in the movement phase, when Blair's HMG hit my eastern flank force with a 6 flat, broke them all, and then went on a rate tear that killed the 8-1 and a squad, and left the remainder ELR'd to 2nd line and running for their lives into my backfield and out of the game. The combination of “Rate Tear Blair's” excellent set-up and deadly HMG's made short work of our attack. By turn 3 the Germans were stopped cold, with far from enough VC's, with Blair organizing a counter-attack from the north. We called it a well-deserved Russian win.
I think this is a good scenario, and I would like to try it again. Pro Tip: It is possible to remove the entire north board (board 7) and just delay entry of the Russian tanks. It appears to serve no purpose beyond that and would definitely save table space.
At Eric's urging, we decided on 'The Munch Box' for lunch instead of San Carlo Deli. It was a beautiful day and the burgers were as good as always. The survivors convened at The Habit for our usual late dinner on the patio. All in all it was a great of ASL!
