We had four members in attendance for the Slaughter at Ponyri CG playtest at the St. Crispin’s Game Day in Anaheim. Dan Plachta and Scott Thompson were in command of the Russians against me and Jim Cotugno commanding the Germans. We also had two visitors, Jon and Justin, a father and son team, join us in the afternoon. They were very interested and promised to join us soon, perhaps at Gameology.

We resumed the July 7th AM CG date with the Russian half of turn 4, and played through the German prep fire phase of turn 5. Both sides continued to inflict damage, with the Germans taking some particularly heavy armor losses at the hands of the Russians’ dug-in T34’s. Dan brought the Russian armor reinforcements (T70’s and a KVI-M42) in through the center of the village, and counter-attacked into the fight on the west flank, driving the Germans out of some recently captured trenches. But a sharp-eyed crew in a Ferdinand on the high ground in the center dialed in and took out the KV, while the German infantry pulled back and regrouped for yet another try into the center of the board.

On the east flank, both sides had fought to exhaustion after being pounded by artillery and rockets. At the top of turn 5 the Germans responded on this flank by lining up another company of infantry, loaded in half tracks, supported by a platoon of StuGIII’s, to redouble their effort on that side. In the turn 5 prep-fire phase the German 150 OBA took advantage of a well-placed pre-reg hex and started pounding the northern-most 2nd level building in Ponyri. In the center, two dug-in T-34’s were knocked out by German Heat rounds and the Germans are now poised to lunge forward through the grain and link up with their west flank forces. The Germans are making gains, but at the cost of frightful losses; exactly as it happened historically.

We called it a day and started wrapping up around 5:30. Attendance was a little light among the other game groups that usually meet at St. Crispins, perhaps because of the weather. All in all, however, it was a great day for us. The carnage will continue in February. Stay tuned!
