We had ten members for the September edition of our SoCalASL Game Day at Emerald Knights.

Dave Nicholas and Blair Bellamy paired up for “Bungle in the Jungle”, with Nick taking the Japanese against Blair's Brits. This is a pretty meaty scenario and they were only able to get part way through it. They decided to write down their locations and finished in Monday.

David Rosner's Germans defeated Larry Reinking's Russians in “Yelna Bridge”.

Ed Esparza's Germans defeated Sal Pelaez' Americans in “Black Day in Hatten”.

Eric Visnowski's SS and Dan Plachta's Russians fought to a draw in “Hohenstaufen Hoedown”.

And JJ Ma took the Germans against my French in “Audacity”. This is one of my favorite scenarios and I have played it several times over the years. It's a great scenario for newer or intermediate players, because it's basically an infantry assault. Both sides can focus on their fundamentals. But, there's Mud, the French get a couple of tanks, and there are Alpine Hills; just enough to keep an experienced player's interest. This one is dead even on the ROAR, and often shows up on mini-tournament play lists.

JJ had a good set-up, and I played it safe by keeping my forward elements as far back as possible. I also attacked pretty conservatively and tried not to give up to many -2 shots. I concentrated on clearing the Germans off the front hill, in order to safely bringing my truck-born infantry as far forward as possible. By turn four my attack was assembled and well underway. But JJ put up a good fight, and his AT Gun took out one of my tanks, putting my French very close to the casualty cap. The scenario went south for JJ on the bottom of the penultimate turn, when three 'must succeed' Prep Fire shots didn't drop, trapping two of his remaining four squads in one building on the board edge. That allowed my French to assault move adjacent to the remaining victory buildings and advance in for the win. JJ played a good game, and this scenario could have gone the other way. We both had a lot of fun. If you've not played this gem, you need to put it on your play list.

We enjoyed our usual chili dog lunch at Larry's. The survivors adjourned to Bob's Big Boy for our traditional late dinner. It was a great way to end a great day of ASL!
