We had six members for the September edition of our SoCalASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth:
Eric Visnowski's Americans defeated Dave Nicholas' Germans in the Schwerepunkt scenario “The Golden Arrow”. And because the game finished pretty quickly, they turned it around and tried again. In this second playing, EV's Germans defeated Nick's Americans. As Nick remarked afterward: “It must be balanced, I lost as both sides…”
James Quinn's Poles defeated Sal Pelaez' Germans in the classic, all cavalry scenario “Rattle of Sabres”.
And Dan Plachta and I paired up for the ESG scenario “Backs to the Wall”. After we pulled the pieces and set the boards up, Dan remembered he'd played it twice before. He was kind enough to give me my choice of sides, and I took the attacking Germans. This is a France '40 scenario where a reinforced company of Germans, backed by a SiG, two PzKw I's and three Pzkw II's, have to capture a building and two canal bridges on board 23. The Brits get a depleted company of infantry, and later an A9 and two MkVI B's. I chose to attack from the German left, and put my HMG/MMG 9-2 kill stack in overwatch on level 1. I put a squad with a LMG at level 1 in the center to cover the road that bisects the British set-up area. I used Smoke from the SiG, and went in hard and fast. For the first three turns basically everything I did worked perfectly, and everything Dan did didn't work. I was able to overrun and cut off his main position, and trapped four broken squads that were forced to surrender. (First time I'd used mopping up to round up broken squads in quite a while.).
But, there's a reason everyone considers Dan one of the most formidable players in the Club. He is incredibly tenacious. Even though I'd pretty much had everything go my way, and rounded up nearly half the British infantry, Dan was still fighting. He brought his tanks forward to cover the retreat, methodically pulled back his surviving troops and stitched a new line together in front of the bridges. By turn four he was ready for more. Unfortunately by that time we'd run out of time, and with three turns to go we decided to call this one a hard-fought draw.
We both enjoyed the game and the scenario. It shows pretty even on the ROAR. Be forewarned however: although this looks like a straight forward, moderate size scenario, there's a lot going on. Both players will need to bring their “A” game. And it will take a lot longer to play than you think. It is challenging for both sides, but fun.
We enjoyed our usual excellent lunch at San Carlo Deli. The survivors adjourned to The Habit for our usual late dinner. It was a great warm-up for our Barbecue next week.
