Greetings ASL Fans;
Well, we started out slow on Saturday at JJ’s, with just four members initially. But reinforcements arrived throughout the day and we ended up with a total of seven in attendance:
Dave Perham and Eric Visnowski paired up for “A Siege of Their Own†with Dave’s Russians defeating EV’s Germans in a battle that lasted all day.
Just before I left for Chattsworth the new issues of “Dispatches†arrived on my laptop, so I quickly printed the scenarios and headed out without reading them. As it turned out, I was able to play one of them against Mike Soffa. We picked “Anchoring the Lineâ€, a new Red Barricades scenario, with Mike taking the Germans against my attacking Russians. The playing area consists of the central east board edge, roughly between Ludnikov’s headquarters and the Kindergarten. The Germans have five victory buildings to hold and secretly assign points to each one. The Russians need to capture 4 points of buildings, but don’t now how much each building is worth until game end. The Russians get a 76L Gun and two MOL projectors, but otherwise it’s an infantry slug-fest. In the end my Russians captured a total of 3 VP worth of buildings, but came up a turn short capturing the Commissar’s house, which would have clinched the win. Mike played a great game and I would certainly like to try this one again.
Late arrivals Blair Bellamy and Dave Rosner set up “Keitel and Coxâ€, with Blair’s Germans defeating Dave’s Americans.
Dave Nicholas, another late arrival, paired up in the early evening with Mike Soffa when our game cleared. They picked “The Hardest Dayâ€, with Mike’s Germans falling to Dave’s Americans.
When all the games had cleared the survivors headed over to Marie Calendar’s for an excellent late dinner. It brought back memories of our group lunches back when Gameology was at its old location in Clairemont.
One of the reasons I like playing on Starter Kit boards is that they're more open. Nearly lost my Tiger when I parked it in Q1 and ignored Dave's stealthy move of a Sherman into Bypass of V1. It comes to my turn and I realize that I'm in trouble. The smart move would have been to Prep Fire, changing my VCA and TCA to do so, for some reason I didn't think of that. Instead I ran a couple of 5-4-8s at the enemy intending to cloud his vision with smoke. Neither one had smoke grenades. Fortunately, the Tiger crew rolled a 6 on the sN7 and Dave missed his TH by one. His Intensive Fire shot on the start up MP malfed the gun and the Tiger was out of danger. One of the many small dramas in your average scenario…
