We had 9 members in attendance for our Special 5th Saturday Game Day at Gameology. Some classic scenarios got played:

Jim Svette’s Russians defeated Fen Yan’s Germans in a down-to-the-last-dice-roll playing of the classic Deluxe scenario “Guryev’s Headquarters”.

Rob Stai’s Chinese fell to Dave Kocot’s Japanese in “Shanghai in Flames”.

Nick Nicholas’ Germans squeezed out a win over Blair Bellamy’s Russians in “Timoshenko’s Attack”.

That left me, Eric Visnowski and Scott Thompson to pair up for a three player game. Scott had to leave around five, so he and I teamed up as the attacking Germans in the new AP10 scenario “Operation Kutzukov”. This is a pretty cool mid-war scenario where both sides get OB choices and the Russians get to purchase fortifications. Eric chose the Ferdinand and StuG combo. We took the SU152’s. Eric knew we’d have to swarm the Ferdinand as soon as it appeared, so he set up a clever trap with his 50L AT gun and some hidden infantry. Things looked good for the Russians at first, and we were able to storm into town fairly quickly and kill the StuG in short order. As Eric had anticipated, we then quickly improvised a swarm attack for the Ferdinand. But Eric’s Germans were waiting for us. And when the smoke cleared most of the Russians tanks were dead. We called it a well-earned German victory. Bravo Eric for an excellent plan!

Scott had to pull out at that point. So Eric and I paired up for the Japanese/Chinese scenario “Bare Foot Beating” from the new AP10. I took the defending Japanese and Eric took the elite 5-3-7 Chinese. I thought I had a pretty good set-up, but I really didn’t get back into the victory area fast enough, and in the end the Chinese firepower just ate up my Japanese squads. It still came down to the last CC phase though. But in the end, Eric had his second win of the day.

We had our usual lunch at The Hat, and enjoyed the excellent weather by eating outside for a change. We cleared out just as the store was closing at 9:00 PM. It was an excellent day with an excellent turnout.
