I stopped at my local Costco today and noticed they had quite a selection of WW2 history trade paperbacks
in stock. “Among Helmet for My Pillow” ” With the Old Breed” and perhaps 6 other titles were “Neptunes Inferno” and”The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors” by Hornfisher. These two I bought on the spot at only $ 10.49 each.Last Stand , originally published in 2004, recalls the naval battle off Samur in the Phillipines that began October 25, 1944.The book is written using interviews with veterans, declassified documents and unpublished eyewitnedd accounts. Finding this book was a bit of serendipity for me as I had posted to the list some months ago that I was looking for suggestions on this particulat battle. Someone[ I think Dave Niclolas]recommended this title so finaly. I have it
The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors looks quite promising, and I can't wait to get to it.
The other selection I purchased is” Neptunes Inferno” originally published in 2011, also by Hornfischer, narrarates the sea battles
for and around Guadalcanal begining in August 1942. This has of course been coverd in the past
by other historians , but with access to hitherto unpublished documents and interviews with survivors
will hopefully shed some new details and anecdotes of the seven major naval engagements that took place in the infamous” slot”.If you're looking to fill some shelf space with some interesting reading, on the cheap, I suggest a trip to your local Costco a.s.a.p.

Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is one of the best naval history books I have read…the story is incredible, telling about the destroyers and destroyer escorts screening Taffy 3 during the battle off Samar during the Leyte Gulf landings. Naval version of David leading a cavalry charge against multiple Goliaths…destroyers armed with 3″ guns attacking heavy cruisers and battleships in a desperate attempt to give the carriers time to launch aircraft. You will find it difficultto put this book down…excellent purchase!
