One of the fun things about playing against Mr. Vegas is the interesting discussion that occurs. On turn two Eric announced, with a straight face, that he was pushing the 75L around a building. I suggested he was joking, but no, he wanted the AT relocated and thought he could do it that way. Fortunately, C10.3 states: “A Gun cannot be pushed using Bypass…” He accepted that ruling and promptly rolled low enough to get it into the building. During the next Russian Mph he got off an APCR shot with the same gun that took out an IS-2. The exchange got me thinking: Why aren't we allowed to Bypass buildings when pushing Guns? It could work the same as Vehicle Bypass, with the Gun located at a hex vertex. It wouldn't make things that much more complicated.
September 30, 2013 at 10:08 pm #6193Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterOne of the reasons I like playing on Starter Kit boards is that they're more open. Nearly lost my Tiger when I parked it in Q1 and ignored Dave's stealthy move of a Sherman into Bypass of V1. It comes to my turn and I realize that I'm in trouble. The smart move would have been to Prep Fire, changing my VCA and TCA to do so, for some reason I didn't think of that. Instead I ran a couple of 5-4-8s at the enemy intending to cloud his vision with smoke. Neither one had smoke grenades. Fortunately, the Tiger crew rolled a 6 on the sN7 and Dave missed his TH by one. His Intensive Fire shot on the start up MP malfed the gun and the Tiger was out of danger. One of the many small dramas in your average scenario…
September 3, 2013 at 12:20 am #6192Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterIn our game Chip made a smart move that I'll have to try sometime. He set up his guns, AA and MTR, close to each other. I thought I'd cleared the way for my troops to move forward when I broke the crew of the 88L and it routed back into the woods. Wrong–his hidden MTR Crew dropped possession and advanced to the AA gun position, remanned the weapon and then survived all the fire I could throw at it to flame a Sherman in the Defensive Fire Phase. Then he rallied the broken crew and it picked up the MTR. The old switcheroo…
August 19, 2013 at 9:43 pm #6190Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterMy games at EK proved again the maxim that's it's better to be lucky than smart at ASL. In “Sound Retreat” I thought I had lost the scenario on the first turn when I decided to attack with my motorcyclists on a broad front–that's probably not the best opening move. But I managed to get my 37AT gun unloaded and behind a wall and it accounted for two of the three Mk VIBs. Then my intrepid scout HS shrugged off a few OR attempts by two Carriers, went into CC against one of them, Immobilized it and then Burned it. On the other side of the map, 7-0 Cpl Koch leapt off his sidecar and into CC with another Carrier. He managed to Immobilize it, setting it up for a kill shot from a PSW 231(6R). Later, that PSW managed a CH on another carrier to reach the CVP goal.
In “Butchers and Bakers” my Brits stepped into and out of both AP Minefields with nary a scratch.
We'll see what happens this Saturday at JJ's–I'll be using the same dice…
April 30, 2013 at 1:35 am #6189Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterJust wanted to add to Jim's review that JJ's Game Lounge is a very congenial place to play–friendly folks, good lighting, and a tolerance for the occasional comment that follows an especially bad dice roll.
And I had to share a war story. On the last American turn I created a 6+1 during a Self Rally and then had him lead a half squad into a Melee so I didn't have to CX to get to the hex. He attacked alone(of course)and managed to kill an enemy half squad to put me over the CVP. Victory! And everything had seemed so dark the turn before. 6+1s–heroes you don't really care about…July 23, 2012 at 7:47 pm #6179Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterJust checked ROAR, “Showtime” has 33 Russian wins vs 14 German, so it seems the key decision I made in the game was to ask for the Soviet side.
March 13, 2012 at 8:16 pm #6160Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterGreat. I won't have time to do more on the 17th except have a chili dog at Larry's, so playing on the 24th works for me.
March 12, 2012 at 7:51 am #6159Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterI could play on Saturday, March 24th. Are you planning to attend the game day at Emerald Knights in Burbank on the 17th?
June 21, 2011 at 9:51 pm #6130Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterThanks for the win, but our game ended too early to call. We were just starting Turn 4 when Dave had to leave. The Poles were making slow and steady progress and there were a lot of them still Cloaked. On the other hand, I felt certain my reinforcements could stem the tide, just like in the Aftermath. Seriously, barring some lucky rolls on Dave's part my AFVs would have ruled the board. ROAR has this overwhelmingly Polish though. It was extremely interesting to play Night, both more and less complicated than I thought it would be. And this was my third game day Doomed Battalions scenario, I have to say I'm liking the Early War stuff. Maybe I can talk Ed into “Fighting Back” when we meet at Gameology in a couple of weeks…
February 11, 2011 at 8:33 am #5870Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterI will ALWAYS replace the 8-0 with the 9-0.
The number of units you will RALLY vs the number of units you won't with the 8-0 due to DM alone makes it a no-brainer. You will easily lose 1/2 less troops to COMMISSAR vs the troops you lose for FtR.
As for the 8-1 to 10-0… scenario dependant. again… (-1) mod is just ok…Russians are used to not having the leadership. BUT the 10 ML unit on the Field will give YOU the needed ML boost when your flanks are failing. LOL
January 5, 2011 at 11:20 pm #6074Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterReferencing #9, I believe the agreed upon name for 10 or more bitch-ups is “Huggy Bear” rather than “Total Bitch”. All other rules clarifications and descriptions are dead balls accurate. I might also add that Scott is indeed my bitch and I own him.
September 22, 2010 at 5:17 pm #6043Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterYou should post this AAR to the GameSqaud ASL Forum under tournaments. A great event needs great publicity.
September 13, 2010 at 10:51 pm #6040Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterDave, will only get down to Irvine on Saturday morning. Ray.
September 10, 2010 at 6:29 pm #6036Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterI tried replying so this might be the second of a similar note. I am interested in scenarios and like “They're Coming.” I plan to be there the whole time starting Saturday. Let me know if you are interested.

July 26, 2010 at 6:32 pm #6008Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterEmerald Knights Comics and Games is a great venue. I brought my video camera and recorded some of the hot and heavy ASL action. Okay, that doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean…
